Charles Kennedy Building

Charles Kennedy Building

Charles Kennedy Building, Fort William The development of a once neglected School building to create a wonderful modern community complex. In May 2018 the Highland Council relocated to a former secondary school that had been transformed and renamed the Charles Kennedy building after the late MP who had once attended the school. The development of this once neglected building has created a wonderful modern complex that provides both the local Fort William community and the wider Lochaber district with an abundance of up to date community facilities as well as a rejuvenated archive centre. The main contractor, Robertsons, worked closely with the Highland Council to produce a sympathetic high-quality redevelopment of the site, including the creation of landscaped areas that called for elements of street furniture that would compliment the old and new aspects of the build. Benchmark Street Furniture was approached and put forward a range of design options that spoke to this specification. With this area of the UK experiencing harsher climatic conditions the choice of materials needed to be carefully considered. Ultimately items from our Shoreline range were chosen, that combine 316 stainless steel with FSC approved Iroko hardwood. A suite of seats(SL003), benches(SL006), litter bins(SL052) and cycle hoops are now installed in the newly created external spaces to be enjoyed by those who work or visit this impressive redevelopment of a once derelict site. Bespoke Benches for ACS International School

Bespoke Benches for ACS International School

Bespoke benches for ACS International School, Cobham Curved Shoreline bespoke benches for large central focal point at busy International School. ACS International School, Cobham approached us due to our flexibility in being able to curve street furniture to exact requirements. They required a number of bespoke benches for their large courtyard, which features a central statue. The design concept was to provide curved benches that could encompass this focal point. Due to the nature of the paving and footpaths each bench had to be a different length, but by using the same radi we were able to provide products that fitted the exact spaces. In total 5 benches where required ranging from 2metres to 14m. With our simple manufacturing technique, we can produce furniture to any length and any curve. They opted for our SL007 Shoreline bench at 600mm width over the SL008 450mm. This allows seating from both sides and creates an a less formal space. These are standard widths, but we can easily accommodate other dimensions as everything is made to measure. The overall scheme created a great informal space with adequate seating for the busy growing school, and due to the materials used the furniture will blend subtly in to the back ground, yet last for many years to come. Bespoke products for Dragon School, Oxford

Bespoke products for Dragon School, Oxford

Bespoke products for Dragon School, Oxford During the summer break the renowned Dragon School in Oxford began improvements to a large central playground Dragon school, Oxford were looking for some bespoke products for a new playground scheme. After visiting the site we went away to design up some one-off items for this prestigious school. The concept came from our Shoreline range, adapted to meet the demands of a busy playground. A communal oval table with matching curved benches required some innovative design solutions. To simplify the production of the unique slats that make up the tabletop, a cutting template was made. The client also requested that the design allowed for potential future relocations. We achieved this by including a detachable mechanical fix between the tabletop and stainless steel profile, as well as a solid resin fix between the profile and the large free-standing granite blocks. This enables the tabletop and granite blocks to be disconnected and relocated as manageable separate items. This versatile double-fix solution was also incorporated into the accompanying benches, along with staple ends to protect the timbers as well as offering a smooth continuous look. We also supplied our standard Shoreline SL008 curved bench and SLPL planter. With a 2.5m diameter and 1.8m height, this is one of the largest planters we have produced to date and required engineering to keep it safe and workable. To this aim we fitted a large aluminium liner to take the additional weight The overall scheme provided a high quality, bespoke furniture range to the renovated playground, as well as a few excited comments from staff who thought the planter...
Cowick Street, Exeter

Cowick Street, Exeter

Cowick Street, Exeter Shoreline Custom SL007s. Having previously supplied Exeter City Council with items from our Shoreline range, we were delighted when asked to help with the design of some bespoke seating for the planned improvements to Cowick Street. The aim of the improvement was to create an area that would attract more shoppers and visitors to the historic centre of St Thomas. The council’s design team produced a colourful scheme using blue, green and red furniture which changed from east to west along Cowick Street, with blue closest to the River Exe, green to refer to the agricultural heritage of St Thomas and red to reflect the colour of the local natural stone in the hills to the west. Benchmark was asked to design and produce curved seating based on our Shoreline range, with the addition of backrests and arms. The result was a series of curved seats that snaked around the existing trees, providing a practical, vibrant and cohesive feel to this historic area. Borough of Kensington and Chelsea

Borough of Kensington and Chelsea

Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Benchmark Design provided a unique and practical seating solution to a large area in Queensberry Way, Kensington. The Borough of Kensington and Chelsea asked Benchmark Design to provide a seating solution for a large area in Queensberry Way, Kensington, centred around a single tree. Not wanting individual curved benches, the specification was for a continuous curve around the raised concrete tree bed. The obvious solution was to use a bench from our 007 range (licence to seat), which can be curved to any radius and manufactured to any length – in this case, over 7 metres long. With the selection of our Shoreline design (with a powder-coated finish on the steel frame) enabling it to blend in with the surrounding environment. The Borough of Kensington and Chelsea were delighted with the proposed design and cost, and had funds left to add further benches. SL005s, with a straight angle bend, were used to match the angle in the brickwork outside the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle School. The final outcome was a neat and tidy public area providing ample seating in a harmonious design. Bracknell Enterprise & Innovation Hub

Bracknell Enterprise & Innovation Hub A landscape makeover creating a series of carefully designed planted spaces. Bracknell Enterprise & Innovation Hub has undergone a landscape makeover, creating a series of carefully designed planted spaces that help soften the car parking areas and provide an attractive entrance to the surrounding offices. This was created with the use of hard and soft elements, including gravel and paved pathways, surrounded with new planting of trees and hardy shrubs. Benches from our Shoreline range were chosen to complement the general theme of this project, as they are built from a combination of 316 stainless steel and Iroko timber. As each area required a different length bench it was a simple task of measuring the space and manufacturing to suit. The Shoreline range has been designed in such a way that it can easily be adapted to meet the specific needs of each client. West Street, Horsham

West Street, Horsham Regeneration plans for the town centre have taken another step forward with the updating of West Street, the town’s primary shopping area. Horsham means ‘place of horses’ and as such, this has been used as a theme to link the landscaping elements together. After public consultation, a scheme was approved that included items from our Shoreline range. Back-to-back seats constructed from Iroko timber slats were selected, some of which were inscribed with facts about Horsham’s equine history. Planters and litter bins were also installed, these etched with poems written by local school children. The whole area, which includes horseshoes set into the new paving and improved lighting, has transformed the street into an engaging and informing public space.
